ISN-IPNA Webinar: Pediatric Hemodialysis in a Resource-Limited Setting – Tanzania Experience

  • 2 PM CET

There is a huge burden of CKD among children in low-resource settings, including sub-Saharan African countries. In most sub-Saharan African countries, including Tanzania, there are limited facilities for the provision of renal replacement therapy for CKD. In countries where these facilities are available, services are not accessible for children with CKD.

Among the reasons for lack of access to haemodialysis care for children are the lack of paediatric-friendly supplies, knowledge, and skills of healthcare providers, and limited financial ability for families of affected children. The low number of children accessing services has an impact on the quality of haemodialysis services offered to children.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe the main indications for haemodialysis in children and the key considerations for vascular access.

  • Explain how to monitor paediatric haemodialysis, including safety, adequacy, and complication surveillance.

  • Identify major challenges in maintaining paediatric haemodialysis programmes in resource-limited settings and discuss practical strategies to address them.
